Hotel Sekizenkan in Shima Onsen (Gunma)

Shima Onsen is a well-known hot spring resort located in Nakanojo-machi, Gunma prefecture.
Hotel Sekizenkan built in 1691 is Japan's oldest wooden building for a hotel with hot spring.

Sekizenkan has a hot spring source on the riverbed of 100 m upstream of Arayu River which flows under this red bridge.


'Shima' of Shima Onsen means forty thousand.  Its etymology is said to mean that Shima hot spring has medicinal effects to cure forty thousand disease.

Shima Onsen was first designated as a People's Recreation Spa.  It's said to be especially effective for gastro-enteric disorders.

Kawara-no-Yu, a hot spring on riverside.     There is a small park on the roof of the bath house.

Kawara-no-Yu is a public bathhouse situated at the foot of Hagi-bashi bridge on the confluence of Shima River and Arayu River.
